Developer Interview: Vienna Studios

Personal Profile

More about the designer

I love photography and every kind of visual art presentation. I’m Marathon finisher just like fellow watch face developer Ayla Gokmen from the Smart Watch Face brand.

Where abouts are you from?

I’m living in Austria; however, I was born in the former Czechoslovakia.

What is your technical background and education?

I got my strong technical background in natural sciences PhD studies in Slovakia and Austria. For watch face design I learned a lot at the Facers platform (facer.io) under the brand TOMAJA Design. You could find a lot of tutorials I created at https://medium.com/@tomaja and at the Facer Community Forum as well.

What inspires you to design watch faces?

The biggest inspiration is the time measurements with mechanical watches in general. I’m fascinated with the possibility to transfer this analog spirit into digital art form.

How many watch faces do you have in your collection right now?

We are offering more than 730 premium and luxury watch faces at our Galaxy Stores and on the Facer Platform. In addition to these we have another 30 models that we are close to publishing. Moreover, I’m happy to announce, that we just received the 2 Million milestone of downloaded watch faces this month (July 2019).

Do you have a particular theme you like to create your designs around? If so, what is it?

Recently, I love to (re)create mechanical movements, which are based on the classic analog watch. I like to incorporate these movements into the digital form and the smartwatch allows me to do this.

What are your top most popular and/or most download watch faces in your collection?

Popular Luxury Watch Face – ProLotus - http://apps.samsung.com/gear/appDetail.as?appId=com.watchface.ProLotus
Popular Premium Watch Face – Regenkoenig - http://apps.samsung.com/gear/appDetail.as?appId=com.watchface.WAWRegenKoenig

What designs are you working on next and when can we expect to see them?

Usually, one or two designs are being published every day so far. However, the weekend is always a special occasion for us to publish our most creative art pieces in the Master Pieces & Dominus Mathias series. The best way for customers to find our new (including not yet published) watch faces is to follow our Instagram accounts:

Watch Face Community

Please talk a little about the watch face community and what makes it interesting/special for you?

It is a great feeling to be part of a new and growing community and to be able to influence the smartwatch potential for the next phase. I’m very curious to see how the scene will look like in few years, when smartwatches become as common as smartphones are today. Additionally, it is fascinating to see how designers like to share their knowledge and how the companies (e.g. Ron and Cristian from Samsung team) support us on our creative journey to offer the best possible digital products.

Why should designers consider developing watch faces?

There has never been an option before to wear unlimited amount of watch faces every day and change them as quick as possible. This new possibility opens a limitless horizon for designers.

What are the common pitfalls you see when designers first start out and how should they avoid them?

There is nothing to avoid from my point of view. The more variety there is in the watch faces pool, the better it is for all smartwatch users.

If you could a new developer one piece of advice, what would it be?

I would recommend that anyone starting out in the design area to look at these great tips from the incredibly talented developer Christopher Shomo of Infinity Watchfaces - https://youtu.be/fj_RwrNHz3k?t=563 In my case, I just followed his recommendations and I was able to quickly see success and moved into the TOP 5 designers in only 10 months. So a huge thanks goes out to Chris for sharing his knowledge and experience. And if any of your users would like to ask me any questions about designing and developing watch faces then they are welcome to contact me directly: office.vienna.studios@gmail.com

Which developers create watch face designs you really like and that inspire you?

I’m a big fan of Matteo Dini’s harmonic and functional design. Other developers that I find that are very inspiring for me is Nicolas Castro (BERGEN Watch Faces – bergen.io) and Splügen. URARITY (Drazen Stojic) and FRISS (Ramon Campos) show us how popular a very original watch face can be as well.
